i-MiEV Technology
Motor
The AC synchronous permanent magnet motor
develops 49kW (66bhp) and a high 180Nm (133 lb.ft) of torque - but
importantly all of the latter is available instantly, from 0rpm right up
to 2,000rpm, enabling the i-MiEV to easily keep up with city traffic.
The motor continues to pull strongly beyond 2,000rpm ensuring a relaxed
driving experience.
Transmission
The motor’s high torque output and ability to
spin to 8,000rpm means no gear changes are necessary, and the single
gear ratio (6.066:1) delivers optimal performance. The transmission
includes a conventional differential but no reverse gear is required
since the motor spins in the opposite direction when R (Reverse) is
selected via the gearshift.
Traction Battery
The traction battery pack, located below the
i-MiEV’s floor, consists of 88 lithium-ion 3.7V/50Ah cells connected in
series to deliver 330V/16kWh, and powers the electric motor (via the
inverter), air conditioning and cabin heater. Other devices are powered
by a conventional 12V auxiliary battery, charged by the traction battery
via a DC-DC converter integrated with the on-board charger. Safety
features include a cell monitoring device, electrical leakage detector
and a very strong protective casing.
Inverter
The inverter unit converts the traction battery’s DC output voltage into a 3-phase AC supply required by the electric motor.
On-board Charger
Battery charging from a normal domestic
electricity supply is achieved via an on-board charger which converts
mains AC voltage to a suitable charging voltage for the traction
battery. A full charge from at or near empty can be achieved in around 7
hours. i-MiEV is supplied with a dedicated 5-metre domestic charging
cable (N.B. A conventional extension cable must never be used!) The
normal charging socket is located on the rear right-hand side of the
vehicle.
Rapid Charging
If access to a rapid charging point is
available, i-MiEV can be charged from empty to 80% in as little as 30
minutes. The rapid charging socket is located on the rear left-hand side
of the vehicle, and is designed to be compatible with the standardised
connector on the end of the rapid charging unit's heavy-duty cable.
Driving Modes
When the accelerator is released the vehicle
will slow down due to the regenerative braking effect - under this
condition the inertia of the vehicle turns the motor into a generator
which momentarily recharges the traction battery. i-MiEV has three
driving modes, marked D, B and C on the gearshift panel. D mode is for
urban driving, tuned to be energy efficient; B mode increases
regenerative braking during downhill driving; C mode decreases it for
smoother driving characteristics on longer runs.
Energy Usage Indicator
The large central display includes an array
of conventional warning lights, a large central digital speedometer and
the semi-circular Energy Usage Indicator - keeping the needle within the
green ’Eco’ zone as much as possible while driving extends the usable
range. Releasing the accelerator initiates regenerative braking which
moves the needle into the blue ‘Charge’ zone.
Energy Level Gauge
Range Remaining Display
Pressing a button scrolls the small circular
screen to the right of the main display through milometer, trip A, trip
B, illumination control, service reminder (in miles and months
remaining) and range remaining on current traction battery charge level,
which is calculated on energy consumption over the last 15 miles and
air conditioning usage.
ABS with EBD
Lateral slippage can easily occur if the rear
wheels lock up due to braking hard on slippery surfaces or braking hard
when at high speeds. ABS suppresses this by controlling the brakes’
hydraulic pressure. EBD adjusts the rear wheels’ braking force to the
number of occupants and load to deliver braking force that is ideally
matched to almost any situation.
M-ASTC
Active Stability Control -
If sensors located throughout the car detect unstable movement, such as
lateral slippage, the Stability Control function automatically controls
the brakes and motor torque to stabilise the car. Traction Control - If the
sensors detect wheel slip when starting on slick surfaces, such as a
snow-covered road, the Traction Control function automatically brakes
the slipping wheel and governs motor torque to enable a smoother start.
Unlike other vehicles it also functions while decelerating, to improve
stability during regenerative braking.
Suspension
The i-MiEV adopts a MacPherson strut design
for its front suspension which, assisted by a stabiliser bar, provides
excellent on-road handling characteristics. The rear suspension employs a
3-link de Dion system. The traction battery position also provides
i-MiEV with a low centre of gravity for stable cornering performance.
Six Airbags
To keep occupants in every seat safe in the
event of a collision, the i-MiEV is equipped with a 6-airbag system to
provide protection from all sides. Curtain airbags extending along both
sides protect front and 2nd-row occupants in a side collision, while the
1st-row occupants are additionally protected by front and side airbags.

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X is more sophisticated, involving
and technologically-advanced than ever before. It incorporates every bit
of knowledge Mitsubishi Motors has gained through creation of the
previous nine generations of Lancer Evolution and from decades of
competing successfully at the highest levels of international rallying.
Most importantly, Lancer Evolution X connects and
interacts completely with the driver in all conditions, providing the
very highest levels of driving pleasure to match its mighty performance.
Lancer Evolution X Technology
Engine
Available on: All variants
The 4B11 uses a die-cast aluminium block to
reduce weight, strengthened to withstand the stress of high-output
operation and utilising a ladder frame structure to reduce noise,
vibration and harshness. Designed to be inherently smooth-running it
negates the need for secondary balancer shafts, which also contributes
to weight reduction and allows the engine to be more compact.
Furthermore, the 4B11 uses a forward facing intake and rearward facing
exhaust ports. This change eliminated the need to run the exhaust pipe
under the engine, allowing it to be lowered by 10mm and contributing to
the vehicle's lower centre of gravity.
MIVEC Variable Valve Timing
Available on: All variants
Improvements in fuel economy were achieved
through utilizing an improved MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-timing
Electronic Control) system, which now operates on the exhaust as well as
the intake valves. Furthermore, the camshaft lobs now activate the
valves directly instead of via rocker arms for improved accuracy and
reliability.
Titanium Turbocharger

TC-SST Gearshift
Available on: All variants
The 6-speed TC-SST is effectively two three-speed
gearboxes mounted on the same output shaft and with two clutches, one
which engages the gear in use, the other which pre-selects the next gear
required. In manual mode the shift quality is both quicker and smoother
than any human could manage with a conventional gearbox. In addition to
the automatic and manual transmission, the TC-SST also offers a choice
of driving modes: 'Normal' (comfort and economy), 'Sport' gear (changes
at higher revs), in Super-Sport mode shifts happen at 6500 rpm, throttle
response is even more aggressive and the transmission downshifts
automatically on braking for a bend, but holds the gear around the
corner.
Only avaliable on SST variants
ABS with EBD
Available on: All variants
Massive Brembo brakes with 350mm ventilated discs
with four piston calipers at the front and 330mm items at the rear
offer huge stopping power even before electronic safety measures like
Sport ABS and EBD need be triggered. Electronic Brake-force Distribution
(EBD) makes sure that each wheel has the maximum possible braking power
available at all times.
RISE Body Construction
Available on: All variants
Built around Mitsubishi's cutting edge RISE
monocoque structure this massively strong assembly employs the strategic
use of ultra-high tensile steels never before seen in any Lancer
Evolution model to ensure maximum crash protection from all angles. The
body is designed to direct impact forces away from the occupants and for
the car's extremities to deform in a pre-programmed manner while the
passengers remain within a steel safety cell.
Aluminium Body Panels
Available on: All variants
Aluminium is used extensively in the construction
of the Lancer Evolution X, with the roof, bonnet, front wings and front
and rear bumper beams being made from this ultra-light material. This
serves to keep weight to a minimum, to concentrate mass in the centre of
the car and keep the centre of gravity as low as possible.
High-strength steel is used extensively to reduce mass while maintaining
structural integrity. The result is an Evolution that is 39 percent
stiffer against twisting and 64 percent more rigid against bending
compared to the previous model.
Aerodynamic Styling
Available on: All variants
At the front large air intakes ensure the engine
receives the cooling it needs, whilst the whole front bumper is styled
to decrease drag and lift. Underneath the car, air is channeled by
diffusers to increase down force and therefore grip and stability at
high speeds while, at the back, the substantial rear spoiler plays an
important part in maintaining the car’s aerodynamic balance and handling
consistency at all speeds. Wing blisters transport the side air streams
rearwards without separation - whilst such distinctive styling features
as the trapezoidal grille, the NACA duct on the hood and the kick-up
shape of the front part of the wheel-arch are all designed for optimum
cooling.
Suspension
Available on: All variants
The Lancer Evolution X adopts a proven front
MacPherson strut and rear multi-link suspension layout, enhanced by
world-renowned Bilstein shock absorbers (inverted at the front) and
Eibach coil springs all round. Front and rear stabiliser bars, a front
strut brace, extensive use of aluminium and rigid attachment to the
car's structure ensure excellent on-road handling characteristics,
improved ride comfort and very sure-footed cornering performance.
Wheels and Tyres
Available on: All variants
The Evolution X is fitted with 245/40R18
low-profile tyres with an asymmetrical tread pattern and optimized inner
structure. These are fitted to 18-inch aluminium wheels, which undergo a
spinning process to increase strength and reduce the weight and
thickness of the rims. The rim shape itself, together with the location
of the spokes, are specially designed to produce a highly rigid,
lightweight wheel.
S-AWC 4WD System
Available on: All variants
Super All Wheel Control is the collective name
for a number of different electronic and mechanical devices which work
together to create the phenomenal way the Lancer Evolution X responds to
the driver; it can be tailored to best suit snow, gravel or tarmac
surfaces at the flick of a switch. At the heart of the S-AWC lies an
Active Centre Differential. Unlike a passive system it processes
information to determine the optimal torque split between the front and
rear axles and distributes it via a hydraulic multi-plate clutch. Active
Yaw Control (AYC), unique amongst road-going cars, utilises an
electronically controlled rear differential to take information about
longitudinal and lateral acceleration, steering angle and wheel speed
and apportions torque between the rear wheels according to need. Active
Stability Control (ASC) regulates the engine power and braking force at
each wheel to prevent a loss of control, so smoothly and swiftly that
the driver is often unaware of its operation: it can be disabled
partially or fully. The final link in the chain of control is, of
course, Sports ABS.
HID Headlamps with AFS
Available on: All variants
HID (High Intensity Discharge) or bi-xenon
headlamps give substantially improved lighting of the road ahead,
enabling you to see potential hazards sooner and so take avoiding action
more quickly than normal halogen headlamps would allow. AFS (Adaptive
Front lighting System) provides additional lighting to illuminate your
direction of travel during cornering manoeuvres - activation is
dependant upon steering angle and vehicle speed, not operating above 62
mph. Headlamp washers and automatic beam levelling complete the package.
Rain and Dusk Sensors
Available on: All variants
A windscreen-mounted sensor detects moisture on
the glass and activates the wipers automatically, whilst an optical
sensor switches the head and tail lamps on and off depending on the
outside light level.
Cabin Ergonomics
Available on: All variants
A windscreen-mounted sensor detects moisture on
the glass and activates the wipers automatically, whilst an optical
sensor switches the head and tail lamps on and off depending on the
outside light level.
